Biography[]

Life and Career[]

Ruth, a native of New York City, was an established stage actress on Broadway for three decades before venturing into the world of TV and films. She made her Broadway debut in 1950 in the Broadway play The Tower Beyond Tragedy. She also appeared in such stage productions as Sticks and Bones, The Prisoner of Second Avenue and Little Murders. Ruth made her TV series debut on Deadline in 1961; other TV show appearances include the long-running CBS-TV soap opera Guiding Light in 1969, and numerous guest appearances in the 1970s All in the Family, Maude, The Jeffersons, Rhoda, The Waltons, and Lou Grant, as well as appearances in the films No Deposit, No Return (1976), Cat Murkil and the Silks (1977) and The Last Flight of Noah's Ark (1980).

Ruth is perhaps most familiar to TV viewers for her role as "Aunt Harriet" in a series of Kraft Mayonnaise commercials during the 1980s. In that decade, more TV series guest roles would continue, appearing in such shows as Sanford, Quincy, M.E., Remington Steele, and in the 1990s, MacGyver, profiler, and ER, her last TV series appearance, as well as parts in the TV films Between Two Brothers (1981), Billionaire Boys Club (1987) and Caught in the Act (1993), and notable appearances in the films The Last Flight of Noah's Ark (1980), and the comedy Stewardess School (1986). In one of her final stage performances, Ruth appeared as the German grandmother in a production of Neil Simon's Lost in Yonkers, off-Broadway.
