Alan, who was born and raised in Homestead, Florida, and attended Tulane University and the University of Miami, graduating with a BA in business.

Feature film appearance include Weekend Warriors, Bump in the Night, Tom, Dick and Harry, and the film Simple Wish where he appeared with Martin Short and Kathleen Turner.
Alan co-starred for five seasons with William Conrad and Joe Penny on CBS's Jake and the Fatman TV series. He also appeared as Evan Grant on NBC's Another World daytime soap opera series, "Dr. Ellis Marshall" on the ABC-TV soap opera All My Children. Other notable appearances include, The PBS program Contact - "Live From Lincoln Center, and the CBS Movie of the Week Redflag. Alan has guest starred on numerous television shows including, Law and Order, NBC-TV's Homicide: Life on the Street and Facts of Life, Throb and NBC-TV's Matlock.
Music and other works
Alan is an originating member of the Broadway Tenors with Brent Barrett and Brian d'Arcy James. He has sung at the White House and performed for three U.S Presidents. Alan is also the Artistic Producer of Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy Theater in Raleigh, North Carolina, and is a founding member of H.O.L.A. (Heart of Los Angeles) Youth Theatre, providing an artistic outlet and guidance to inner-city children.
Family life
Alan resides in Raleigh, North Carolina and shares a daughter, Riley Rose with ex-wife actress Lauren Kennedy. Alan was previously married to actress Nova Ball from 1987-1990.
